10 Strange Folklore Myths You Won't Believe

5. Black Dogs Were Omens

Traditionally, the colour black is associated with being evil and unclean and it has been throughout history. Unfortunately, it was the logic behind the slave trade as white people were seen as pure and civilised and black people weren't even treated as humans, just because of their skin colour. This rationale has also been associated with animals as black cats are considered unlucky and dogs were thought of as bad omens. According to Welsh mythology, Gwylli also known as hellhounds, are huge black dogs that haunt people during the night, particularly travellers on country roads. They have razor sharp teeth, red eyes, super speed and strength and legend has it, that whenever you see one, you will die either immediately or shortly after your encounter. But maybe its scary looks just give it a bad reputation? There are folklore tales that claim that they're not evil and will often accompany women on their walk home at night to make sure that they are kept safe - it's a shame that the women run and scream when all it wants to do is play.
