4. The Artist: Walter Sickert

Walter Sickert was amongst the most important English artists of the past 150 years. He was also part of the London artistic scene during 1888 along with such luminaries as Oscar Wilde and James Whistler. His name as a Ripper suspect has been relatively recent but there is no doubt that he did have some interesting connections to the crimes- having painted Mary Kelly and possibly other victims of the Ripper. He was also quite interested in the case, painting several paintings from the perspective of the killer and said to have dined out on the murders for some years afterwards telling various tall tales and rumours relating to the Ripper. Having said that, there is no real tangible evidence to suggest that Sickert was connected with murders themselves and several accounts had him in France during the early killings.
