4. Epping Forest, Essex

There's more to Essex than fake tans and faker reality shows - the county also happens to home one of the most haunted forests in the country. In Epping Forest there are more spirits, entities and strange happenings than most of the rest of this list combined. Most famously, it is believed that the ghost of legendary highwayman Dick Turpin haunts the forest, what with it's proximity not only to his hideout, but the main road to London at the time. People have reported seeing the image of a man upon a black horse, wearing a tricorne hat, and most believe this is Turpin. Besides dandy highwaymen, the forest is also said to be haunted by Queen Boudica, the warrior queen of the Iceni tribe circa AD60. It also, surprise surprise, happens to be rife with poltergeist activity. People have said they feel the touch of unseen hands and a few have even been pushed over when they are on their own. Just outside the forest, spirits plague the local roads and roundabouts, interfering with traffic and generally worrying drivers in the area. There has been sightings of a headless motorcyclist, a horsedrawn carriage and (potentially the freakiest of all), a girl who runs out in front of moving cars and stares dead into the eyes of the driver before disappearing just as the car would hit her.
