10 Most Terrifying Places In England

5. Fort Amherst, Kent

Fort Amherst was built on the South coast in 1756 and stands proud as one of the most complete examples of a Napoleonic fort remaining in the British isles. The fort was built to defend any potential invasion from the French across the English channel and features a warren of tunnels dug into the cliff to allow the easy transport of ammunition for the cannons pointing out to any potential invasion force. The fort was opened to the public in the 80s, and there have been multiple reports of ghosts, ghouls and strange activity in the tunnels ever since. Reports vary - from the sound of women wailing and children crying to small handprints on clothing and bags as if they had been touched by a child with dusty hands. One of the most common happenings is people hearing voices so close, it's as if someone is whispering in their ear, which would no doubt put the willies up anyone. Despite phantom children and the odd poltergeist activity in the tunnels, regular visitors and staff at the Fort have encountered one of the stranger supernatural experiences in this list. On the lower gun floor, the ghost of a soldier will sometimes appear and make himself known, but only if he appears to recognise you. New visitors to the fort have never seen him, rather, once they have visited several times he will appear. According to witness reports, he is one of the few apparitions in the area who will respond if challenged directly, making him certainly one of the strangest spectres encountered, given his recognition and responsiveness. Acorah says: Do those cannons still work?
