10 Wars Started For Ridiculous Reasons

10. The Falklands War

449px The Empire Strikes Back Newsweek It was the 1980s and fascism was no longer a popular form of government. In Argentina, President Galtieri could feel his iron fisted grip over the people lax into butterfingers. The regime needed some form of movement to regain the spirit of nationalism throughout the land and excite the people about living under marshal law. They needed a war. There was no need for a large, expensive war, but rather for one that could showcase Galtieri's power. It was decided they would invade the Falklands. These islands, which are off the coast of Argentina and would be easy for their forces to reach, had been part of the British Empire although it had achieved independence of the crown long ago. Without aid the islands were an easy target with a peaceful government and a handful of British Royal Marines. On March 19th Argentinean forces first took the island of South Georgia before launching a full-scale attack on the Falklands on April 2nd. The few marines stationed there were doomed. The invasion was a smash success for Galtieri. To make him leave Britain would have to declare open war on Argentina and fight back in force. More than likely they would send no answer at all. However, what Galtieri failed to recognize was the resolve of Britain's prime minister at the time - Margaret Thatcher. In response to Argentina's unprovoked attack on the islands Britain struck back with the entire Royal Navy by launching the largest amphibious assault since June 6th, 1944. Within three months after extensive fighting on land, air, and sea, Argentina withdrew completely. Their forces returned home where Galtieri's regime was overthrown by a revolution sometime later. Having proven that despite appearances you still don't mess with the empire, British forces also returned to their great isle. In all, the war surprisingly saw only a thousand casualties. To this day Argentina still claims sovereignty over the Falklands.
