11 Breathtakingly Beautiful Places That Will Kill You Horribly
7. The Boiling Lake - Dominica
The Boiling Lake in Dominica is situated in a flooded fumarole - a crack in the Earth's crust - which gives us a clue as to how it got its name.
"Boiling Lake", by the way, is not a cute nickname for a hot spring like the ones you frolicked in on your trip to Iceland, the waters in this lake are quite literally at boiling point and any attempt at frolicking will see that you're lightly poached.
It's thought that the water seeps down through the porous rock until it reaches a pocket of magmas that heats it to searing temperatures before sending it back to the surface.
Even more bizarrely, the water level of the lake varies wildly. At some points it was estimated to be around 195 feet deep, but then in 1880 it disappeared altogether, leaving behind a boiling water and steam jet. It filled up again but then in 2004, the levels dropped by around 33 feet, only to be refilled again in the space of a single day.
Cause of death: Boiled alive.
