11 Craziest Things People Have Done In The Name Of Science
4. Crushing The Testicles
Using the words "crush" and "testicles" in the same sentence would make most blokes turn a funny sort of grey colour. But to Herbert Woollard and Edward Carmichael, it sounded like a fun day out.
The pair were studying a phenomenon known as referred pain from internal organs, which is a pain that occurs somewhere other than the site of the stimulus (for example, the pain in the arm that comes with a heart attack). Despite the variety of organs they had to choose from, they decided to choose their testicles to play out their kinks ... er, conduct their experiments.
One of the men (we're not sure which) lay on a table whilst the other placed weight on his crown jewels and made unconcerned notes such as “slight discomfort in the right groin” as they stacked the weight on.
It wasn't all for nothing, as the pair managed to deduce that the pain will spread up to the back at a weight of 0.9 kilograms. A lesson that we can all learn something from we're sure - most notably that it's a bad idea to apply large amounts of force to the testicles.
