Found: Parent's house Value: £53,105,000 A mother and son were clearing out the house of the mother's late parents, when they came across this distinctive vase. Not realising that it was far more than just bric-a-brac, they put it to one side while selecting things for auction. Later, they decided that vase might as well go on auction too, and an excitable auctioneer valued what turned out to be a Quianlong-Dynasty porcelain work at around £1.2 million. In an unexpected turn, the auction price went up and up, as Chinese businessmen fought for the piece. Eventually, the price settled at £53,105,000, which is believed to be the most a piece of Chinese artwork has ever sold at auction. The mother and son had already believed the £1.2 million to be far too high an estimate, and they later asked to remain anonymous in order to keep their wealth a secret.
