11. St Patrick Wasn't Even From Ireland... And He Was A Slave

Celebrating Ireland's greatest son, St Patrick, on March 17? Well you'll be struggling - seeing as he wasn't actually from the Emerald Isle! In fact, St Patrick was probably born in Wales - although possibly in England or Scotland - in 390 AD in Roman Britain. That actually made him a Roman citizen. St Patrick only made his way to Ireland forcibly - he was captured by Irish raiders when he was 16 and then taken to the Emerald Isle as a slave, working as a shepherd for six years before he finally "found God". So Ireland's biggest celebration is actually a commemoration of a Welshman!
