Not one to squirrel away his riches, King founded The Stephen and Tabitha King Foundation with his wife - a private non-profit that awards grants of around $2.8 million per year in his home state of Maine.

But that's not all. Stephen King donates around $4 million every year to various organisations who really need the money, including fire stations, arts organisations and libraries. Take, for example, his contribution of $3 million in 2013 to help save the Bangor Public Library, on top of having previously given $2.5 million to erect a new wing.

In 1992, he also donated to the building of the Shawn T. Mansfield Stadium for baseball in Bangor, with the only condition attached to the money being that he should be able to see one of their scoreboards from his house.
