Okay, so most runners at various events dont run to music. Its even in the Race Information, We would like to discourage runners from wearing IPods or MP3 players... but still, a bit of motivational music before the event, or on a training run, is sometimes all you need to push you through your personal hurdles. It is important to pick intelligently though, just in-case other runners hear it at the start line. Its all good and well going for a remix of Bang Bang by Jessie J but will the lyrics Bang Bang in the room/Bang Bang all over you really get you in the right frame of mind? Obviously you could listen to Song of Innocence by U2 but that singles you out as both a cheapskate AND a U2 fan. Obviously, some hard paced techno music will get your pulse racing. You could however go for something with some deep, meaningful lyrics about breaking through barriers, something like Running Up That Hill by Kate Bush, And if I only could/Make a deal with God. Then you think, Sod it and flick forwards to Eye of the Tiger, headphones in, eyes closed as thirty runners turn around to look at you. Who cares? Its the eye of the tiger/Its the thrill of the fight and you imagine yourself running down an LA beach, hugging Apollo Creed in the sea and throwing your arm up in slow motion...as you stand in a rainy car park near Middlesbrough waiting for 9am to roll round.
