15 'Facts' You're All Wrong About

10. Ulcers Are Caused By Stress

€œMy uncle had terrible problems with stomach ulcers because of the stress he had to deal with. True story.€
We€™re not going to be the ones to dispute unimpeachable €˜my uncle did this€™ anecdotal evidence, clearly€ but is it possible that he had to deal with a load of stress due to the fact that he had terrible problems with stomach ulcers? Just a thought. Because ulcers, whether stomach or intestinal, are caused by the presence of a bacterium, helicobacter pylori. Half the population of the world have these nasty little fellas brooding inside them, meaning that it€™s the most widespread infection in the world today. Despite this, only 10-15% of people with a helicobacter pylori infection develop ulcers. No one€™s entirely sure why that is, but maybe, like punters avoiding random pub psychos, the other 85-90% of the population just kept their heads down, avoided eye contact and bought them a drink when they bumped into them at the bar. Whatever the reason for the unpredictable effects of infection, it€™s definitely not caused by stress €“ or spicy food, for that matter. Your uncle just has lairy little men inside him that hate his guts.
