15 Famous People Who Turned Down Knighthoods

15. Danny Boyle (2013)

A celebrated film and theatre director - responsible for such great movies as Slumdog Millionaire, 127 hours and Trainspotting - Danny Boyle was actually offered a knighthood in the New Year honours' list in 2013 for his involvement in the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games. Cyclist Bradley Wiggins and sailor Ben Ainslie accepted knighthoods for their gold-medal achievements, but Boyle rejected the chance to be recognised for his role as artistic director for "Isles of Wonder", the opening ceremony of the London Games. Although refusing to be drawn on his decision, Lancashire-born Boyle commented at the time: "I'm very proud to be an equal citizen, and I think that's what the opening ceremony was actually about."
