15 Greatest Stephen King Short Stories Of All Time
9. The Mist
The Mist is one of Stephen King's most celebrated stories, a novella steeped in fear, violence, and horror. Set where else but in Maine, the story tells of a small town that is suddenly shrouded in a thick, unfathomable mist - a mist with animalistic creatures hiding with it, hidden and waiting to kill and feed.
Told from the perspective of David Drayton, the novella mostly takes place in a local supermarket, as he and his son hide out from the monsters lurking outside and must come face to face with survivors who believe the ends times have come and a sacrifice is needed to appease the creatures and save mankind.
Dealing at once with the fear of the unknown and tackling the differing beliefs of people in the midst of a tragedy, The Mist is both a tale of monsters and survival, brought together in one bleak and unapologetic vision of armageddon. It's truly one of the greats, and it's easy to see why it made such a brilliant (albeit slightly different) movie.
