15 Mind-Blowing Pictures Of Space
6. The Dark Side Of Pluto
https://twitter.com/ObservingSpace/status/624653891913646080This image of Pluto was snapped as New Horizons space probe sped past it and on into the Kuiper Belt during its 2015 flyby.
It shows the little dwarf planet from behind, backlit by the sun. One of the most significant features of the image is the hazy halo of light around the edge.
This is Pluto's thin atmosphere, much of which is escaping off into space. It extends 100 miles above the surface, that's five times further than scientists predicted.
New Horizons has so far only sent back a fraction of the data it collected on its flyby, so there will be plenty more where this one came from.
