5. Earth From A Million Miles Up

This picture of Earth (yes, Earth still counts as part of the universe!) was taken from 1 million miles above its surface by by a NASA camera on the Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR) satellite.

It shows the massive continent of Africa with parts of Europe and the Middle East visible above it. This image gives us a good idea of the true size of the continent, which is so often shrunken and distorted on maps of the world.

This is due to the difficulty of representing a spherical object like the Earth on a flat piece of paper, but here we can see Africa in all its enormous, three-dimensional glory.
