10. Joke

You likely have never needed a thorough explanation of what a joke is, and so you've never come across its magical Wikipedia entry. This is a 7,000 word description about the very idea of saying words that are intended to amuse, and it appears to be written for aliens trying to understand human culture.

It begins with a 500 word introduction noting that a joke involves words spoken with the objective of producing laughter in another human person, and they can be said in a public or private setting! So, in other words, they can be said in any setting? Later, under "Response," it's noted that the "expected response to a joke is laughter. The joke teller hopes the audience 'gets it' and is entertained."

Then we get to "Electronic joking," emailing jokes and responding with "(:" or "LOL." A few sections here are genuinely interesting, such as one about the psychology of humor and the physiology of laughter, but it's just so weird to read a detached breakdown of something as basic as the concept of humor. Who could possibly be needing to look this up?
