In the general spirit of supernatural strangeness that pervades the North York Moors, every year the region hosts a Scarecrow Festival. While this might sound like a bit of harmless, Halloween-style fun, driving through a series of medieval villages in the pitch black of night reveals streets, fields and gardens full of homemade scarecrows dressed in everything from World War II uniforms to cricket gear. Terrifying? Yes. Another fine Yorkshirian contribution to the human cause? Absolutely. Note that 2015's year's 'winner' was a blood-spattered scarecrow missing two limbs, flailing in the jaws of a shark.
