As proud as we are of Yorkshire as a whole, we're also proud of every part of it no matter how big, small or strange, and therefore take the naming of places very seriously. This has given us some of the best place names in the country, including Great Fryupdale, a tiny hamlet with nothing in it but four cottages, a field and a gate, Wetwang, a village that once elected Countdown host Richard Whiteley as mayor and the Hole of Horcum, a 400ft valley known locally as 'The Devil's Punchbowl'. Even our street names don't escape: Butt Hole Road stands proudly at the entrance to Conisbrough while Tickle Cock Bridge in Castleford, a place so beloved of local residents that they launched a successful campaign to stop the council changing its name, spans the York and North Midland Railway.
