15 Things Only People From Jersey Will Understand

13. Is That How I Pronounce Your Surname?

No. No it's not. To use myself an example, my surname is Blampied. How do you think you pronounce that? Whatever you thought, that's wrong. And I hate you. It's pronounced Blom-pee-ay, because it's French. Because all of our surnames are French. The island used to be part of the Duchy of Normandy, so everything that dates far back, i.e. our surnames, the names of most places, they're all French. Then we became anglicised and because we're British, people expect our names to go a certain way. Pallot, Pirouet, Picot, Le Feuvre, Le Maistre. Good luck with those. And then WE come off as the pretentious guys. I can't just say, "actually it's Blom-pee-ay" without appearing like just the biggest tool. So I have accepted the fact that, to literally every doctor, every bank teller, everyone who sees my name before they meet me, I will be Adam Blam-peed, Adam Blamp-eyed, or, once, Adam Blam-Pie-Head.
