15 Things Only People From Northern Ireland Will Understand

14. That Dr Hook And The Medicine Show Are The Best Band Ever

http://youtu.be/UPrixYOTNHw Northern Ireland is known for its traditional music. Ireland also has a rich but very banal native Country Music scene - think Daniel O'Donnell and it all goes downhill from there. Country music is so enmeshed in the culture of Northern Ireland that Garth Brooks is practically considered a Saint there for his contribution to music. But most loved of all is Dr Hook and the Medicine Show - those guys of "Sylvia's Mother" fame. A get together in Northern Ireland is not complete without a rendition of the song. Cue everyone drunkenly warbling "And the operator says 40 cents more for the next three minutes!". Follow this up with "Everybody's Making it Big But Me" ("They've got groupies for their band and all I've got is my right hand!") and you have a classic Ulster evening to remember.
