15 Weird Christmas Foods You Hope You Won't See This Holiday
13. Green Bean Casserole
A tried and true classic that seems to sneak its way on to every American holiday table, green bean casserole is actually a strange melange. The casserole was invented, if you can call it that, in 1955 by the Campbells Soup Company, because apparently in 1955 most Americans had a can of cream of mushroom soup and canned green beans on hand. Instead of wondering why that might be the case, Campbell's pressed ahead to make something "tasty". Take those tinned items, mix them together and then top them with Frenchs crispy onions. Then, you bake it. Some home chefs like to amp it up with a dash of soy sauce or some Cajun seasoning, but that seems like a betrayal of the particularly bland heritage of the dish.
