16 Mind-Blowing Facts About Edgar Allan Poe

2. American Football Side The Baltimore Ravens Are Named After One Of Poe's Famous Poems

When the owner of the American football side the Cleveland Browns, Art Modell, announced his plans to move his franchise to Baltimore in 1996, he needed a new name - and he drew inspiration from Poe, who was died and buried in Maryland. Poe - who also lived in Baltimore for a period of his life - famously wrote the poem "The Raven" in January 1845, and this has been recognised as one of his greatest works. In honour of Poe, Modell's new American football franchise became known as "The Baltimore Ravens" - and they have enjoyed great success in a short period of time, reaching the end-of-season playoffs 10 times, as well as winning the Super Bowl twice.
