1. The Great Escape, 1945
As chronicled in the classic 1963 war movie, in 1944 Squadron Leader Roger Bushell RAF led an inspired, large scale escape from Stalag Luft III in Sagan (then in German territory). In total 76 men escaped, after Bushell had aimed to get 200 out, but almost all (73) were recaptured. The unhappy ending that wasn't shown in the film saw 50 escapees, including Bushell executed.
