So compelling was the story of Japanese anti-hero Shiratori that a book and TV drama were dedicated to its telling. And no surprise: he had escaped prison four times, in incredibly clever ways (weakening locks with Miso soup and digging to freedom with a bowl on two separate occasions). He was sentenced to death, but his popularity seemingly saved him and he ended up released after 26 years.
