18 Magical Facts About Disneyland You Probably Didn't Know

15. On Opening Day, The Asphalt Was Melting Because Of The Heat

The asphalt wasn't completely set, and women's heels were sinking into the ground.

14. The Jungle Cruise Ride Officially Has Its Own Functioning Jungle

Because of the mix of different plants from around the world, the Jungle Cruise jungle, which has been at the park since opening day, has evolved into a mini ecosystem that thrives on its own.

13. There Used To Be A Tobacco Shop On Main Street USA

The Tobacco Shop was one of the original attractions from opening day in 1955 when smoking rules in the park were a lot more lax. The shop closed, however, in 1991, but the traditional cigar store Native American statue that stood in front of the store is still there today.

12. There Also Used To Be A Lingerie Shop On Main Street USA

Yes, in addition to selling tobacco, Disneyland also sold lingerie at the Intimate Apparel Shop, which was another attraction from opening day in 1955. The shop didn't last long, however, and it closed in 1956. The storefront of the shop, which is light blue with white trim (on the right in the above photo), is still located on Main Street USA.

11. There Is A Pet Cemetery At The Haunted Mansion

Imagineer Kim Irvine (daughter of Leota Toombs, the voice of Madame Leota in the ride) came up with the idea to fill up the empty space on the north side of the mansion next to the wheelchair path. There aren't and never have been any actual animals buried in the cemetery, but it is more of an inside joke among cast members.
