Just weeks before the US-led coalition invaded Iraq in 2003, Hussein attempted to prevent the seemingly-inevitable upcoming war by trying to issue an appeal to American President George W Bush. In his first interview with a US reporter in more than a decade, Hussein told CBS news anchor Dan Rather in February 2003 that he did not have any weapons of mass destruction (WMDs) - and that he wanted to have a live televised debate with President Bush. Obviously the debate never came to fruition, and Hussein fell from power just weeks later - having been unable to convince Bush to listen to his assurances that he did not have an WMDs.
