During the 1970s, Hussein introduced a law into Iraq in defence of men who had committed acts of murder in the home. This new law allowed a man to kill a woman without fear of punishment - if he could prove the act was made in defence of their family's honour. The term "family honour" was not stringently defined, however, and therefore many men were able to get away with possible murder charges by merely claiming their wives had acted in opposition to their family's honour...
