18 Mind-Blowing Facts You Didn't Know About Nelson Mandela

2. Mandela Was Offered The Opportunity To Be Released From Prison Early On Six Separate Occasions... But Refused On Principle

On at least six separate occasions Mandela was offered the opportunity to be released from his prison sentence on Robben Island early - and every single time he declined on principle. One famous example was in February 1985 when, on the urging of British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, South African President PW Botha offered Mandela his freedom on the condition that he "unconditionally rejected violence as a political weapon". Mandela did not hesitate in turning Botha down, however, insisting that:
"What freedom am I being offered while the organisation of the people (the ANC) remains banned? One free men can negotiate. A prisoner cannot enter into contracts."
