20 Freakishly Specific Predictions From History That Came True
10. Dick Cheney Predicts US Being Bogged-Down In An Extensive Conflict In Iraq (1994)
Dick Cheney was the US Secretary of State when America took part in the first Gulf War between 1990 and 1991 - and just three years later he predicted how catastrophic it would be to return to invade Iraq. Cheney said:
"If we would have gone into Bagdad we would have been all alone, it would have been a US occupation of Iraq... Once you got to Iraq and took it over, took down Suddam Husseins government, then what are you gonna put in its place? "Thats a very volatile part of the world, and if you take down the central government of Iraq, you can easily end up seeing pieces of Iraq fly off. Part of it the Syrians would like to have to the west, part of eastern Iraq the Iranians would like to claim, in the north youve got the Kurds... its a quagmire."
Despite this, as George W Bush's Vice-President, Cheney supported the US invasion of Iraq in March 2003 - a conflict which, as the former Secretary of State had predicted, lasted for the following eight-and-a-half years without a sufficient finish.
