20 Problems Only People From Derby Will Understand
8. Replacing The Old Bus Station With An Even Smaller Bus Station
Being such an old town there's plenty of interesting architecture in Derby to make up for the Intu eyesore, not least the many old "haunted" pubs. The old bus station might not have been quite as old as Ye Olde Dolphin Inne but its art deco cafe and diner made it stand out from the crowd. It was also the first purpose-built bus station in the United Kingdom, proving again that in addition to single-handedly kickstarting the Industrial Revolution Derby folk have a knack for firsts (Derby's Arboretum park was the first recreational public park in the country, too) and while it could have done with a lick of paint for the most part it did the job. Unfortunately it was replaced with what feels like a smaller bus station with its very own survey slalom at the entrance and a casino attached to the side. Contrary to what this might imply, the people of Derby aren't renowned for their heavy gambling habits.
