20 Ridiculous Things Which Make You Proud Of Being Scottish

4. Our National Anthem Is Furious At Us

O Flower of Scotland, When will we see Your like again, That fought and died for, Your wee bit Hill and Glen, And stood against him, Proud Edward's Army, And sent him homeward, To think again.
The Scots are notoriously self-deprecating and that comes across in our national anthem. Whether you love or loathe 'Flower Of Scotland' there's no doubting that it's really annoyed at modern Scots. We're belting that song out at sporting events worldwide and we're really just singing that we're too rubbish to rise up and crush those pesky English. Who wrote this lament on the Scottish character? Some 17th Century romantic poet sitting in a bleak Highland castle, the wind whipping up mottled fields of purple heather into a delicate, melancholy dance? Nope. The Corries. In 1967.
