4. "Apple Macintosh" And "BBC" Computers
wikiBack before Apple was a particularly cool or well-known company that would churn out several different models of computer a year, we would simply refer to each individual computer as an "Apple Macintosh" - and those early models we used in primary school back in the day were superb. We got our first taste of things that are second nature today, like word processing and basic graphic design, thanks to these bad boys - but they weren't the only computers in school back then. The BBC Micros were still lingering in the early 1990s (having originally been released in 1981, they were discontinued in 1994 and schools were still using them after that) and we were subjected to a number of puzzling games and educational programmes as a result. Most prominently, we were allowed to play those point-and-click adventure games which first came to prominence in the 1980s.
3. Televisions On Wheels
Columbia PicturesEvery school had a television that would get wheeled around from classroom to classroom as and when it was needed. Whether it was a piddly little telly on a unit with casters or a big bulky offering that came - as one product - with wheels and shutters in front of the screen (you remember the ones - they had a big sticker on one side saying "push from this side"), it was always a case of having the TV wheeled in to the class, in the event of being lucky enough to be allowed to watch it, and the anticipation as it arrived was immense.
2. The Heating Breaking Down
reactiongifs.comOh the excitement! Remember those unreliable old heating systems that schools had in our day? It was always a very, very special occasion when they broke down - usually on snowy days - and everyone at school got sent home. The freedom was so much more invigorating than going home at the usual time - what will you do with those priceless extra few hours at home?! And then, without access to the internet, it was a case of listening to the local radio the next morning to hear news about whether or not the heating had been fixed and whether or not you had another bonus day off.
1. Look And Read
BBCLook and Read ran from 1967-2004, so those of us who went through infant school in the late 1980s and primary school in the 1990s were forced to watch it for educational purposes without fail, smack bang in the middle of its prime years - whether it was as the show was being aired or on VHS tape from days, months or even years before. Prominent memories from Look and Read include various stories/dramas that were aired on the show, including "Through the Dragon's Eye", "Badger Girl" (with the infamous "Beast of Dartmoor"), "Geordie Racer" (an absolute classic), Earth Warp and Spywatch. Other features included "Magic, Magic E!" (a segment about the letter "E" - the title of which has a whole new meaning when you see it as an adult) and "Wordy" - a character who featured in the teaching segments of the programme who was sort of a cross between a Henry Hoover and an old typewriter. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l-Gq17O-HRc So there you have it - twenty-one awesome primary school memories that will make 90s kids nostalgic.
