It's scientifically proven that Grey Street is the finest street in Britain (according to Radio 4 listeners, and why would you need to ask anyone else?) and one of the best in Europe. It is an architectural triumph, with stunning buildings on both sides, the Monument itself crowning it at the top and the beautiful Theatre Royal. Plus when you get sick of trying to work out why people love streets so much, it's got the first and second best burgers in Newcastle in Byron Burger and Fat Hippo Underground, and the jewels of Lady Grey's, Longhorns and the Tyneside Cinema are all within a couple of minute's walk. They're the real selling points.
2. Broon
Seriously, if you're in the company of a Geordie and refer to Newcastle Brown Ale as anything other than its full name, or Broon Ale or Dog you're cruising. The nectar - which is sadly no longer brewed in the city - is the most iconic brand (aside from the football club) to come from the banks of the Tyne and it's now grown (partly thanks to genius marketing campaigns) into a worldwide phenomenon. Actually drinking it is something of a rite of passage: it's far heartier than the likes of Fosters and Carling (or soft drinks as proper Geordies call them) and it will put actual hairs on your chest. And your knuckles.
1. It's Not Sunderland (Or London)
