Remember that thing about human faeces in coffee mugs and particles of matter we cannot see? Well the same principle applies to our sense of smell. If you smell something it's because molecules from the object you smell are floating around in the air and travelling up your nose. This applies to your romantic interest's perfume/cologne, fresh flowers in spring, and the occasional dead skunk rotting on the side of the road. This is why if you smell something terrible, you better try to breathe as little as possible because that nasty stuff is going inside your body where it can make you sick.
