There’s something special to be said when an invention becomes so popular and so widespread in its use that it changes the behavior of (nearly) an entire species.

While the telephone was in itself revolutionary, in that it also allowed for a new form of communication between people, the smartphone has become an entirely new phenomenon that has allowed a person to have almost everything they need in the palm of their hand.

Smartphones come with standard features that include: phone, address book, email, web browser, video player (and soon to be actual TV), music player, camera, notepad, map, compass, calculator, watch, the list goes on. Of course, this doesn’t include the literally thousands upon thousands of applications that can be added to it.

It is now commonplace to see people walking down the street with their heads down, buried in their phones as they go about their business, using countless different apps. This is quite possibly one of the greatest example of innovation in human history. Cellphones were once large devices that required antennas to work. Now, they can fit in your pocket, have their own light source, and can do thousands of tasks other than act as an actual portable telephone.

It makes one wonder what lies down the road in the realm of smartphone technology…
