22. Alternative Protein Sources

With meat consumption on the rise, but with food prices similarly soaring, our more traditional ways of raising and eating meat become unsustainable. At this point, we begin looking elsewhere for our sources of protein.

For the brave, there are 1.4 billion tonnes of insect protein scuttling around on and beneath the surface on the planet. Insect consumption is already commonplace in the Far East and some parts of South America, but people in the West may have to get used to the idea of a locust burger.

For the tech-oriented, synthetic lab-grown meat could be the name of the game, with in-vitro meat products starting to hit the market. Produced without cruelty, and at a fraction of the resources and environmental cost, carnivores and vegetarians alike could dine on lab burgers once the psychological hurdles of such a product are overcome.

For the more traditional folk, intensively farmed fish may well tide you over for the 2030s.
