4 Ways The World Could End In Your Lifetime (And 3 Ways We Can Stop It)
3. Reversing Climate Change
Okay, so we got a bit doom and gloom about climate change earlier and, even through we didn't even begin to touch on the horror that it would have in store for us, there could be a glimmer of hope.
As far as we know at the moment, the consequences of our fossil fuel fetish are already baked into the system. That is, even if we all switched to renewable energy tomorrow, the wheels for catastrophic warming have already been set in motion. This is, however, if we only cease to put any more greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, but there's a possibility that an as-yet-not-invented technology for carbon capture could actively remove the CO2 from the atmosphere and maybe, just maybe, put the brakes on climate change.
Trees already do this pretty effectively, but since we keep cutting them down (nice one, humanity), something like this device developed by Carbon Engineering, designed to pull carbon out of the air and turn it into fuel could step into the breach.
So, is climate change reversible? No, not with our current technology, but if history has taught us anything, it's that predicting the technology of the future is nigh on impossible.
