18 September 2014 was when Scotland was asked to vote in a referendum on the question: ‘Should Scotland be an independent country?’

The results showed that Scotland had voted to stay in the United Kingdom after voters decisively rejected independence. With the results in from all 32 council areas, the 'No' side won with 2,001,926 votes compared to 1,617,989 'Yes' votes.

This image captures the uncertainty surrounding the future of the United Kingdom in the days before the voting.
