4. Archpriest Kills Drug Addict In Attempt To Cure Him
In 2009, a disturbing news story emerged from near the town of Novi Pazar in Serbia when a national magazine published a distressing video filmed at the Crna Reka, a rehabilitation center affiliated to the Orthodox Church, in which a drug addict was being brutally punched, kicked, and beaten with a shovel in order to get cured of his sinful habits. At the time, the man in charge of the center, archpriest Branislav Peranovic, commented on the story by saying that the barbarous treatment was necessary for the consenting addicts so that they can be snapped out of their sins.
Three years later, in August 2012, the priest made news again, only this time it was for murder. He had beaten to death Nebojsa Zarubac, a drug addict who was in his care at the Crna Reka center, with a 5-foot (1.5-meters) stick. He was tried and found guilty of second-degree murder and convicted to 20 years in prison.
