It must take a lot to be an amateur detective. By helping to solve crimes via the internet, you dedicate your spare time to doing something that many people make a living out of. Still, those who do it have turned up some pretty incredible results, with this one being one of the most compelling.

After a retired trucker found an abandoned plastic bucket in Missouri and eventually uncovered a human head encased in concrete within it, he reported the disgusting site to the police. The encased head belonged to Gregory May, an unlucky victim who was killed by his best friend Doug DeBruin in a ploy to steal his Civil War antique collection.

Although we know this in hindsight, that might not have been the case were it not for the efforts of online detective Ellen Leach, who identified the skull after finding Gregory May's listing on a missing person's site.

This identification became the evidence needed to put DeBruin away, after he was found in possession of May's memorabilia under suspicious circumstances. He's now serving a life sentence without parole.
