You tend to get the alien architect “theory” a lot with ancient structures, probably because the human brain has a hard time reconciling the methodology of a project with the end result, especially when considering the technological limits of the time.

The Temple of Kailashnath, built in the late 8th century, is not actually a building in the technical sense: rather than being constructed it was carved out of a mountain. All the detail, all the designs, the body of the structure itself was sculpted by excavating nearly 40,000 tons of sandstone. The temple is meant to celebrate Shiva and represent his mountain home of Mt. Kailash, but it really does give the opposite impression of sinking lower into the seething centre of the Earth where the Falmer roam.

Maybe the most truly peculiar aspect of Kailashnath is that its method of construction, by carving from the top and working down, doesn't seem to have been replicated anywhere else on Earth; its style stands alone.
