8 Eerie Works Of Architecture
4. Maunsell Forts - The South East Coast Of England
Many stories have been written about being stranded at sea. A feature of many of these stories is the isolation the ocean creates. Man was not meant to live in the middle of the ocean; the sea continually reminds you of this with its inhospitable nature. So take a moment to really grasp the plight and loneliness of the people who had to occupy these forts.
Constructed off the coast of England during World War 2, the forts were never meant to be aesthetically pleasing. Prettiness makes for a lousy fortification after all. But it's only after several decades of decay that these structures truly began to appear creepy, more like ruins of an unknown race and era.
And yes, no one lived here long term and they weren't designed for comfort, but that didn't stop one family from moving into one in 1967, founding their own nation: Sealand. The micronation has its own coins, stamps, coat of arms, monarchy; the whole nine yards. Some were even used as bases for pirate radio stations, so they could be accurately described as "creepy pirate forts". Versatile.
