8 Miraculous Mysteries With Ridiculously Simple Explanations

4. The Nazca Lines

The Nazca Lines are enormous geoglyphs etched across the Peruvian desert and were only (re)discovered when we had invented planes that fly high enough to view them from above.

Much like crop circles, many people believe that they were the landing strips of ancient aliens, or interplanetary signposts. I mean, the damn things cover nearly 200 square miles, how could stupid Olden Days people build them?

There have been plenty of other, slightly more earthly theories put forwards over the years, including ancient hot air balloons or aircraft or even ancient canals, how else could a primitive culture create vast straight lines in the desert?

Evidence for wooden stakes in the ground actually point to the idea that they used a technique still used by workmen today to ensure a straight line: They tied a bit of rope between two sticks and followed it.

But why would you create huge geoglyphs that can only be seen from above, if not to communicate with aliens? Why indeed, unless you thought that another great being lived in the sky (or indeed the mountains) and was looking down on you. Someone like, say, a god?
