Just like Romeo and Juliet, Emma and Edward weren't able to live happily ever after, or live at all for that matter. It's unclear as to why they were renamed Emma and Edward as their real names were Martha Wrightson and Roger Railton whose families were both innkeepers. The Unicorn Inn used to belong to Martha's family. At the beginning of the 18th Century, Roger and Martha fell in love, and it was that sort of love where you feel like you can conquer anything as long as you have the other person by your side. But if you have ever loved and lost and are rather bitter about it, they were one of those couples that you can't stand to watch in public and you'll just pray that they will indeed, get a room... Anyway, the young couple fell in love but it was their parents who wanted to separate them so they had to meet in secret. In 1713 on Shrove Tuesday, Roger fell ill and begged his parents to let him see Martha. Eventually, both families allowed the two to say their goodbyes as he died three days later. Martha died shortly after from a broken heart and they were buried together. There has also been sightings of a little boy in the cellar along with a bearded man wearing a bowler hat. There have been many ballads and stories written about Emma and Edward as well as the hauntings itself which are frequent in the Ancient Unicorn Inn, Bowes.
