In 2005 the Australian cricket team checked out early from Lumley castle because they were so frightened of what they witnessed during their stay. Grown men were unable to sleep alone in their allocated rooms and decided to bunk up as they were safer in numbers. One member of the team was so frightened by something he saw in his room that he ran to reception in his underwear. Similar things also happened in 2000 with the Indian cricket team, so maybe Lady Lumley wasn't a fan of the sport. Lily Lumley still haunts this castle in County Durham as it is believed that she was murdered by two priests after she renounced the Catholic faith. She was thrown down a well and her husband, Ralph Lumley, was led to believe that she had run off to the nunnery to work as a nun. Her ghost is said to float up from the well, stalk the grounds of the castle and haunt the corridors, scaring guests who are sleeping in her house. A number of orbs have been seen, glasses have moved by themselves and smashed from tables and children can be heard playing on the top floor.
