Sony was one of the first to the robot-that-tugs-at-your-heartstrings game a decade ago with AIBO dogs, which some owners even held funerals for. After some drastic cost cutting, Sony is finally back in the robotics game, and is this time promising to give us what we want: a robot capable of forming an emotional bond with its owner.

Fans of I, Robot and The Matrix may find advancements in AI and robotics more unsettling than inspiring. Still, what better way to prevent the robot uprising than to program them to love us?
