8. Noma
Noma, or cancrum oris, is a gangrenous infection that affects the facial tissues, particularly the soft tissues around the cheeks and mouth.
For added douchebaggery, it is more common in children under six. It very quickly disfigures and disables its victims, rendering them unable to eat and speak and often results in sufferers being ostracised from their communities.
It is quickly and easily treatable with antibiotics and was eradicated from Europe and North America some 100 years ago (making a brief reappearance in the Nazi concentration camps during WWII). But where the treatments are unavailable or prohibitively expensive, the survival rate can be as low as 20%.
