7. Taptic Engine For Directions
While the Taptic Engine sounds like something you might find on the USS Enterprise, in reality it is slightly less exciting. The name is a portmanteau of tap and "haptic feedback", and a fancy way of saying 'vibrations that give information' - similar to old video game joysticks. If you're wearing your Apple Watch while driving, or on a long journey, it can sometimes be preferable to have feedback from your wrist than having to look to your phone all the time - especially if you've forgotten your headphones. As such, the Apple Watch will alert you with a series of taps for left and right turns. For a left turn, you'll get a series of two taps, played three times; while for a right turn, you'll get a steady beat of 12 taps. At the end of your journey, your Apple Watch will give a long vibration to let you know that you're near your destination (and a cheap wrist massage to boot).
