Doctor Sleep: 5 Best References To The Shining

5. The Return Of Halloran

Shining 3 Halloran The beginning of Dr. Sleep starts right where the Shining left off with a fifty-page introduction to the story (you are reading a Stephen King book after all). Danny and his physically and mentally scarred mother have moved to Florida to escape the past, but the ghosts have moved with them. Thoroughly horrified that the apparitions have followed Wendy calls the kindly Dick Halloran who first gave them the tour at the Overlook to come to Danny's rescue. Dick comes without hesitation knowing exactly what is happening and begins a conversation with Danny by using the Shining. He explains to Danny that when he was younger evil ghosts used to plague him until his white gramma, called white because she was good not because she was actually white, showed him how to trap the spirits inside a silver lockbox. Danny quickly learns how to keep the ghosts of the past at bay more or less and has a conversation with Halloran at the end where they reminisce about the first time they met.
